Breathing a sigh of relief is the derigueur of south Floridians at this time of the year–no more hurricane-paranoia that embodies the zeitgeist of the tropics for 6 months…and, the temperature is no longer Africa-hot!! I truly love it…But a year ago, this very week, the fibroid that lupron was able to quiet down, began to brew its own private storm within my uterus. I’m 55, and menopause surely should have tapped me on the shoulder to join her ever-burgeoning club by now! But noooo, not only do I have a fibroid that is the size of a 5-6 month fetus, but menopause was evidently NOT around the corner. 55 years old, geeesh! So on Nov. 2 of last year (2007) I had a life-changing procedure: Focused Ultrasound. And, I do mean life-changing. My radiologist, Dr. Susan LeBlang (the queen of all goddesses) was able to ablate that ginormous fibroid by a whopping 2/3. An accomplishment beyond belief. Now, fast forward to Nov. 2 of this year (2008) and every single little thing is sooooo pleasurable again—you see, I hung on to my fibroid-ridden uterus for 10 years. I lost a good chunk of that time both waking up and going to sleep with fibroid-brain…angst, indeed. I now am a grandma, fibroid-free, and, oh yes, I have joined the girls club too…menopause!! Ahhhhhhh…relief.
