HERS Conference Experience

Earlier this month I traveled to Atlanta to attend the HERS Conference presented by the HERS Foundation.  Coming up to the conference I was thrilled at the prospect of attending a conference presented by a group that unabashedly shines a light on this increasingly huge issue in our society.  Many women are told by their physicians they need a hysterectomy, and 1/3 of all reported hysterectomies are performed on women who have uterine fibroids.  Ovary-sparing, uterus-sparing, and cervix-sparing procedures may not even be presented as options by a physician who is not trained in these procedures.  Having taught yoga for 7+years I have developed a strong awareness for the importance of the pelvic floor, all the muscles, ligaments and tendons, not to mention nerve and vascular systems that support the internal organs as gravity weighs on us day-in and day-out.  Any disruption, whether it be an infection, a heavy menstrual cycle, or over-exercise can wreck havoc on the delicate balance of support necessary to keep our system functioning, and these are all when the body exists in its whole form.  Following a surgical procedure - even that of a minimally invasive one, there is a disruption far beyond measure.  Any woman who has given birth can share with you the challenges of bringing strength back to the pelvic floor muscles, but when those connections are severed, or removed completely, that balance is impossible to recover.  The stories I heard were powerful as well as frightening.  I know the answer for all women is education, awareness and choice.  Those are the things that Fibroid Relief supports and encourages and my hope and belief is that through awareness there will be change.

Check out HERS and their video on women’s anatomy - it’s really quite eye-opening.
