Youth Is Beauty–Beauty Is Youth…ahhh, but is it Truth?
Three days ago a text message arrives: “watch Susan Boyle on you tube…so cute” Oh, goody!!…I anticipated yet another video depicting an animal trainers antic, purposefully pushing our ahh-that’s-cute button (conveniently located right in front of our cranial lobes!! ) Click/click /click, YouTube Susan Boyle. WOW, where have I been?..13 million people have seen this before I even knew about this–hmmm. Cute!?Huh, cute!? For heavens sake, her voice is ethereal–I would suggest, even, angel-like..but,..cute!? cute!? I think not. As the video continued to role, the camera focused on the judges, both, on the panel and those in the audience. A look of shock and bewilderment became the frozen masks displayed on each of their faces–as if Ice-9 touched them, one, by one, by one, by one. A unison of amazed zombies!! My reaction began to surface quickly–a wave of shame, tweaked with a cringing tinge of embarrassment!! Why was everyone so taken-aback ??… that a 48 year old, simple, average-looking woman would not be able to sing like an angel?!? What does this say about a society, that, for 48 yrs. a stunning voice lay mute and unrecognized for its true loveliness? That her talent was invisible for decades, because no one really looked at her. No one ever noticed anything because her outward appearance branded her invisible. We should be ashamed of ourselves!!… all of those lemming-like stunned faces, as well. I am left scratching my head with lots of questions, and have been left derailed squarely off my thought-tracks. ?? Beauty is so worshiped, and, vanity, so accepted, that we have summarily catapulted untalented celebra-tards into the stratosphere of godliness!! It is aggravating and disheartening that so very many REALLY talented, are overlooked and undiscovered. We set up barriers and ridiculous visual-scaffolding that formulate a perfect “outside” package. By doing so, we paint ourselves into teeny corners and miss out on the full scope of our collective human potential–never to be reached/seen/heard!! Can you only imagine the abundance of untapped “art-forms” that lay idling..idling..idling….waiting to be recognized??? Lest I kid myself, or YOU, my daughter modeled for a stretch of time—as she would attest, IT IS a tenuous tight-rope that you tread when you are hired because of your beauty. Beauty is a blessing/curse a qualifier/disqualifier…Early early in her life, we iterated that, yes, she was born with those looks…. BUT, the true testament of a persons worth, could be earned by what you give from your inside..from your heart!! “Okay, you are beautiful, now what?” I am proud to say she has a HUGE-giving and loving heart…a real darling inside, as well as, outside beauty.
I am very curious, as to what will become of Susan Boyle, now–will the powers that be” make her over” to accommodate their sensibilities?? The burden and upkeep of the shackles of vanity’s fuss-fuss-fuss, is so consuming both to time and to ones psyche–oh my!! And, with the sensation that she prompted, will there be a “Ripley’s-Believe-It-Or-Not” type of approach, employed to find the most visibly unlikely candidate with that pearl of talent??!! I feel a new chapter foammenting in the 21st century, only to rival the ones written with reference to the Roman Empire!!…we are merely inches away from throwing ourselves into the lions arena for our own sport and pleasure!!
Cultivating my garden has become the external metaphor for “growing/reaping ” an ethical life. A wonderful example , comes directly from my “weeds”…Over the years, I have planted with such bountifulness, that grass is no longer part of our vigorous landscape (happily for my darling, either is mowing!!). The appearance of weeds that volunteer their presence with steadfastness, has gently swayed me towards their acceptance. They have become a part of the colorful canvas of this garden. They produce and reproduce themselves in a sundry of places, happily displaying a very proud flower…in MY garden!! The lesson..??..the ever burgeoning varieties of flowering weeds have led me to view (in the garden, and out) with an unbiased eye! That, they too, are flowers..filled with the very green sap that flows through ALL!!! That, by their very birthright, they too should be afforded their moment in the sun–swaying side-by-side with the much ballyhooed “acceptable” flowers. Do you see the parallels??–of course you do …
An unconditional, unbiased view of people (human flowers!!), will allow the richness and fullness that each and everyone of us, by our OWN birthright, have to offer–in one form or another…use your heart to REALLY “see” the potential that CAN be!!…….
fibroid, fibroid, fibroid…sorry, I know this blog is spoken with a relation to fibroids…but I could not help myself, I HAD TO SPEAK UP!!..fibroid-related or not …….thankyou xx……

That was a lovely piece of writing and so true!! My almost-4-year-old daughter right now believes that Dandilions and nettles are as attractive as beautiful roses - I wonder how long it will be until ’society’ changes her outlook on such things?!!
Thanks for asking me to read this!!
